The word "average" usually refers to the arithmetic mean, but several other types of averages exist and are more appropriate for specific situations. This calculator handles four types: the standard arithmetic mean, the geometric mean, the harmonic mean, and the weighted average.
The arithmetic mean is pulled toward outliers. The geometric mean is appropriate for multiplicative relationships, like average rates of growth or return. The harmonic mean is appropriate for rates and ratios. Choosing the wrong type of average can lead to meaningfully incorrect conclusions.
The most familiar average: add all values and divide by the count. Best used for data that represents additive quantities like test scores, temperatures, or heights.
The nth root of the product of all values. Best used for rates of change, investment returns, and growth rates. If an investment grew by 50% in year one and fell by 30% in year two, the arithmetic mean of 10% is misleading. The geometric mean correctly shows the actual average growth rate was about 2.5%.
Gives different values different levels of importance. A course grade that counts the final exam twice as much as each quiz uses a weighted average. Enter values as "value:weight" pairs (e.g., 90:3, 75:2, 88:1) in weighted mode.
