Dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated with water vapor, causing condensation to form. It is a more reliable indicator of actual atmospheric moisture than relative humidity. When the dew point is close to the air temperature, relative humidity is high and the air feels humid. When the dew point is well below the air temperature, the air feels dry.
A dew point above 65 degrees F feels uncomfortable and muggy to most people. Above 70 degrees F, conditions feel oppressively humid and heat-related illness risk increases significantly. Below 55 degrees F feels comfortable. Below 45 degrees F, the air feels notably dry and may cause skin dryness and static electricity.
Relative humidity changes with temperature, even if the actual moisture content of the air stays the same. As temperature rises, relative humidity drops. As it cools, relative humidity rises. This is why mornings feel more humid than afternoons on the same day. Dew point, by contrast, tracks the actual water content of the air and stays relatively stable until a new air mass moves in.
