A discount calculator solves any of the three questions that come up when something is on sale: what is the final price after a discount, what percentage off is a given sale price, or what was the original price before a discount was applied. All three modes are available in this calculator.
💡 Retailers sometimes mark items up before marking them "on sale." A genuinely good discount is one where the sale price is measurably lower than what the item has been selling for recently, not just lower than an inflated "original" price that was never the real selling price.
A percentage discount is calculated on the original price. A 25% discount on an $80 item saves you $20, leaving a sale price of $60. A 50% discount on the same item saves $40, leaving $40. Stacking discounts — where a store takes an additional percentage off an already-reduced price — compounds differently: a 20% discount followed by an additional 10% off the sale price is not the same as a 30% discount. The combined effective discount is actually 28%.
The most common use is verifying a sale price while shopping. If a store shows an item at $47.99 with a tag claiming 30% off, entering the sale price and discount percentage in the "find original price" mode tells you the original price should have been about $68.56. If the original price shown doesn't match, you've spotted a pricing discrepancy worth questioning.
