Dietary fat is an essential macronutrient. It supports cell membrane structure, hormone production, fat-soluble vitamin absorption (A, D, E, and K), and provides the most calorie-dense energy source at 9 calories per gram. The right amount depends on your total calorie intake and the type of dietary approach you follow.
Not all fats are equal. Unsaturated fats found in olive oil, avocados, nuts, and fatty fish are associated with reduced cardiovascular risk. Saturated fats from animal products and tropical oils should generally be limited to under 10% of total calories. Trans fats, found in partially hydrogenated oils, should be avoided entirely.
US Dietary Guidelines recommend that 20 to 35% of total daily calories come from fat. For a 2,000 calorie diet, that is 44 to 78 grams of fat per day. Of that, saturated fat should account for less than 10% of total calories, or about 22 grams on a 2,000 calorie diet.
Ketogenic and very low carbohydrate diets dramatically increase the proportion of fat in the diet, typically to 55 to 75% of total calories. On a 2,000 calorie keto diet, that equals 122 to 167 grams of fat per day. These approaches rely on fat as the primary fuel source instead of carbohydrates and require a very significant reduction in carbohydrate intake to induce ketosis. Consult a healthcare provider before starting a ketogenic diet, particularly for anyone with existing health conditions.
