Ideal body weight (IBW) is an estimated weight range considered healthy for a given height. Unlike BMI, which tells you where your current weight falls, IBW formulas tell you what weight range to aim for. Several different formulas have been developed over the decades, each with slightly different results, which is why this calculator shows all four major ones alongside the healthy BMI range.
Ideal body weight formulas were originally developed for medical dosing calculations, not as fitness goals. They are general guidelines and do not account for muscle mass, bone density, or body frame size. A large-framed, muscular person may be perfectly healthy above their calculated IBW.
The Hamwi formula (1964) is one of the oldest and simplest: 106 lbs for the first 5 feet of height for men, plus 6 lbs for each additional inch. The Devine formula (1974) was developed for pharmaceutical dosing and became widely used in clinical settings. The Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983) formulas modified Devine with updated coefficients based on population data from those years.
None of these formulas account for body frame size, which can meaningfully affect what a healthy weight looks like for a specific individual. A general rule of thumb: measure your wrist circumference. For women over 5 feet 2 inches, a wrist under 6 inches indicates a small frame and the lower end of the IBW range may be more appropriate, while a wrist over 6.5 inches suggests a large frame where the higher end of the range applies.
