Running pace is the time it takes to cover a set unit of distance, typically expressed as minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer. It is the inverse of speed: a faster runner has a lower pace (fewer minutes per mile) while a slower runner has a higher pace. Pace is useful for planning training runs, setting race goals, and comparing performance across different distances.
Common race benchmarks: A 10-minute per mile pace finishes a 5K in about 31 minutes and a half marathon in about 2:11. A 9-minute mile pace finishes a 5K in about 28 minutes. A sub-8-minute mile pace is considered fast for recreational runners, placing you in approximately the top 25% of race finishers.
Use the pace mode when you have completed a run and want to know your pace from the distance and total time. Use the finish time mode when training for a race and want to know what time you will finish if you hold a target pace. Use the distance mode when you have a fixed time window for a run and want to know how far you can go at a given pace.
Pace (minutes per mile) and speed (miles per hour) are directly related. A 6-minute mile pace equals 10 miles per hour. An 8-minute mile equals 7.5 mph. A 10-minute mile equals 6 mph. To convert: divide 60 by your pace in minutes per mile to get miles per hour, or divide 60 by your mph to get minutes per mile.
