Tiling a floor or wall requires knowing both the total area to be covered and the size of individual tiles. Dividing area by tile size gives a theoretical count, but the real-world number is always higher due to cuts, waste at edges, and the recommendation to keep spare tiles for future repairs.
Always buy at least 10% extra tile and store the leftovers. If a tile cracks or chips years later, having matching tiles from the same batch makes repair seamless. Tile colors and patterns vary slightly between production runs, so perfectly matching replacements purchased later may not exist.
Grout lines take up space between tiles and affect how many tiles fit in a given area. For 12x12 inch tiles with 1/8 inch grout lines, the effective tile unit including grout is 12.125 x 12.125 inches. This calculator accounts for grout width in the tile count, which produces a more accurate result than ignoring grout lines entirely.
Setting tiles at a 45-degree angle to the walls creates a classic diagonal pattern but significantly increases cut waste at the edges. Use the 15% waste factor for diagonal layouts, as the angled cuts produce more unusable partial tiles than straight layouts.
