Square footage comes up constantly in home improvement, real estate, and renovation projects. Flooring, tile, carpet, and paint all require knowing the area of the space you are covering. This calculator handles the four most common room shapes and converts between square feet, square yards, and square meters.
Always add 10% to your calculated square footage when purchasing flooring or tile to account for cuts, waste, and future repairs. For diagonal tile installations, add 15% instead, since diagonal layouts produce more cut waste at the edges.
L-shaped rooms are common in homes, especially in open-plan living spaces. To measure one, break it into two rectangles, measure each separately, and add the areas together. The key is making sure you do not overlap the measurements where the two sections join.
Most flooring products list coverage per box on the packaging. To find how many boxes you need, divide your square footage (plus 10% overage) by the coverage per box and round up to the nearest whole number. Never round down when buying flooring materials.
