Three Ways to Use This Grade Calculator

This calculator handles the three most common grade questions students face. Finding out what you need on a final exam to hit a target grade is the most popular use. Calculating your current grade from assignment scores and weights helps you know where you stand mid-semester. The weighted grade mode lets you combine grades from different categories (homework, tests, projects) that each count for a different portion of the total grade.

To find the grade you need on a final: the formula is (Target Grade minus Current Grade times (1 minus Final Weight)) divided by Final Weight. If you have a 78% and the final is worth 30%, and you want a B (80%), you need at least an 85% on the final. This calculator handles that math automatically.

Weighted Grades

Most courses weight different types of assignments differently. A typical structure might be: homework 20%, quizzes 20%, midterm 25%, final 35%. Your overall grade is not a simple average of your scores, it is a weighted average. A 95% on homework counts less than a 75% on the final in this example. This calculator handles any weighting structure you set up.

Standard Letter Grade Scale

The most common scale used in US secondary and higher education: A 93 to 100, A- 90 to 92, B+ 87 to 89, B 83 to 86, B- 80 to 82, C+ 77 to 79, C 73 to 76, C- 70 to 72, D+ 67 to 69, D 63 to 66, D- 60 to 62, F below 60. Some schools use slightly different cutoffs, so always check your school's official grading policy.
