GPA (Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of your grade points, where the weight is the number of credit hours each course carries. A 3-credit course has three times as much impact on your GPA as a 1-credit course. To calculate GPA, multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, sum all of those products, then divide by the total number of credit hours.
On a standard 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Many schools do not award an A+ distinction on the 4.0 scale, though some use 4.3 or even 4.33 for an A+.
Semester GPA covers only the courses taken in one term. Cumulative GPA covers all courses taken throughout your entire academic career. This calculator computes both when you enter your previous cumulative GPA and total credits earned. If you only want the semester GPA, leave the prior GPA fields blank.
A 3.0 GPA is generally the minimum required to be considered for graduate school, though competitive programs expect 3.5 or higher. Dean's List recognition typically requires a semester GPA of 3.5 or above. Academic probation usually kicks in below 2.0. Scholarships often have GPA maintenance requirements, commonly 2.5 or 3.0.
