Adding and Subtracting Time

Time arithmetic is more complex than regular number arithmetic because it uses a base-60 system for seconds and minutes, and a base-24 system for hours. This means you cannot simply add the digits: 45 minutes plus 30 minutes is not 75 minutes, it is 1 hour and 15 minutes. This calculator handles the carrying and borrowing automatically.

Common time addition uses: adding travel legs to find total trip time, adding work sessions to find total hours worked, calculating the combined duration of video or audio files, adding cooking or exercise intervals together.

Time Subtraction

Subtracting times is useful for finding elapsed time between two events. If a project started at a point representing 2 hours 15 minutes into the workday and ended at 5 hours 45 minutes, the elapsed time is 3 hours 30 minutes. This calculator returns the absolute difference so the order you enter the times does not matter.
