Calculating your actual fuel economy at each fill-up is one of the most useful habits for understanding your vehicle's health and your driving costs. A sudden drop in MPG can indicate a maintenance issue before it becomes a serious problem. Consistent tracking also helps you evaluate whether changes in driving habits or routes are saving fuel.
For an accurate MPG calculation, fill the tank completely each time. Note the odometer reading when you fill up, then again when you fill up next. Divide the miles driven between fill-ups by the gallons pumped at the second fill-up. This is the only reliable way to calculate real-world fuel economy.
Highway driving typically produces better fuel economy than city driving because of fewer stops and starts. Driving above 60 mph dramatically reduces MPG due to aerodynamic drag. Air conditioning adds load to the engine. Cold weather reduces fuel economy. Tire inflation matters: underinflated tires increase rolling resistance. Carrying extra weight in the vehicle also reduces efficiency.
